Chip Mergott: Music Minute

“I Fought the Law”

Remember Sonny Curtis? He sang “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” theme song.

Perhaps more significantly he replaced Buddy Holly in The Crickets and wrote “I Fought the Law,” for them, which was released as a single – and sank like a stone.

But another native born Texan, Bobby Fuller, heard it and (way ahead of his time) released it on his own label in 1964. It became a regional, and then national hit (after he rerecorded it), going Top Ten in 1965.

Sadly, it was only six months later that Bobby Fuller died (under mysterious circumstances.) He was just 23 years old.

The Mergott Music Minute is heard daily on WDVR FM 89.7.
