Bach cantata scheduled

A Lenten offering, part of the regular Bach Cantata series at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Lambertville, N.J., will include selections from two of J.S. Bach’s cantatas at the regularly scheduled 9:30 a.m. liturgy, March 11.

The cantata selections include a well-known chorale, “Jesus bleibet meine Freude” (typically translated as ‘Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”) from cantata 147, which was composed in 1723 during Bach’s first year at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

Four movements from Cantata 173, “Erhöhtes Fleisch und Blut” (“Exalted Flesh and Blood”) will follow; also composed during Bach’s time in Leipzig, this cantata incorporates a Lenten Gospel text “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son….”

The Saint Andrew’s Choir and soloists will be accompanied by a Baroque orchestra composed of strings, flutes and harpsichord. The orchestra and choir will be under the direction of Michael T. Kevane, the parish’s organist and choirmaster.

Saint Andrew’s Church is at the corner of York and Main streets in Lambertville. For information, call 609-397-2425, or visit standrewslambertville.org.
