Chip Mergott: Music Minute

Almost any one of the details behind Paul Revere and the Raiders’ 1966 hit “Kicks” is worth reporting.

It was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil who wrote “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” “On Broadway,” and many other classics. It was produced by Terry Melcher, who produced the first two Byrds albums, was the only child of Doris Day, and was the motivation behind The Manson Family murders after he refused to sign Charles Manson to a record deal.

But the most interesting aspect to the record was its strong anti-drug message, which was thought of as corny by some at the time but now appears prophetic.

In 2004 it made Rolling Stone’s “Top 500 Songs of All Time,” and in 2014 it was listed at 36 in Paste Magazine’s Top 50 Garage Band Songs.

The Mergott Music Minute is heard daily on WDVR FM 89.7.
