Local bands advance to high school jazz showcase finals

Seven of the region’s best high school jazz bands have advanced to the finals of the 2018 SteelStacks High School Jazz Band Showcase presented by King, Spry, Herman, Freund & Faul, LLC.

The groups will perform at 3 p.m. March 11, at the Musikfest Café presented by Yuengling, at the ArtsQuest Center, 101 Founders Way, Bethlehem. Tickets for the finals are $7 at steelstacks.org and 610-332-3378.

On the line this year is the chance to open for the soon-to-be-announced headliners for ArtsQuest’s 2018 RiverJazz festival. The finals will also include performances by the Moravian College Jazz Faculty Ensemble and the awards presentation for the top soloists and top sections.

The 2018 SteelStacks High School Jazz Band Showcase featured a record 21 high school bands from Pennsylvania and New Jersey performing in preliminary rounds Feb. 11 and 18. Among the bands advancing to the finals are: Quakertown Community High School, Quakertown, Director Frank Parker; William Tennent High School, Warminster, Director Charlie DiCarne; Easton Area High School, Easton, Director Carole Lutte.
