Chip Mergott: Music Minute

Tammi Terrell

Tammi Terrell used to get headaches as a little girl growing up in Philadelphia. She signed her first record deal at the age of 15 and recorded numerous singles for various labels before she found big success with Motown, singing duets with Marvin Gaye.

One of her more obscure singles was her haunting version of Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do,” a record I discovered by listening to WDVR’s “Beg, Borrow and Steal.”

At the age of 21, in an almost cinematic moment, she collapsed onstage into Marvin Gaye’s arms, and it was subsequently found that she had a brain tumor

He gave her eulogy three years later in her beloved Philadelphia, as their classic record “You’re All I Need to Get By” played. The beautiful and talented Tammi Terrill (born Thomasina Montgomery), was just 24 when she died.

The Mergott Music Minute is heard daily on WDVR FM 89.7.
