During Eagles’ season Wentzel Dip is the special at Jay's Steak & Hoagie Joint



The top seller at Jay’s is his trademarked Beer Dip sandwich, which has steak, onions and beer dip made using local beer on a pretzel roll.

Jason Green wants everyone to eat well, and he works hard to make that happen.

Not only does he satisfy his customers at Jay’s Steak & Hoagie Joint with cheesesteak sandwiches, wings, salads, hoagies and wraps, but he uses a portion of his profits to make bulk purchases of food for local food banks to satisfy another kind of hunger.

Since starting his food bank donations in 2013, Green has given more than 50,000 pounds of food, which is an indicator of how passionate his customers are about his sandwiches.

Jay’s is tucked away in a corner of Middletown Township called Parkland, one of Bucks County’s oldest neighborhoods, dating back to the 1800s when it was a vacation destination.

After spending time in the corporate world, Green made the leap to his first sandwich shop, a Steak & Hoagie Factory franchise in Penndel. But after a few years went by he wanted to expand and improve on the menu. The franchise said no, so he went out on his own.

That was in 2013, when he opened his first Jay’s on Business Route 1 in Penndel. In 2016 he moved his shop to the cozy village of Parkland.

Along the way he developed the many sandwiches his customers love, with the top spot going to his trademarked Beer Dip sandwich.

He starts with his personal version of a pretzel roll, which is shaped like a hoagie roll but has the dark, rich exterior of a soft pretzel and coarse-grained salt on top. He slathers that with his trademarked beer dip, made with cream cheese and locally brewed Broken Goblet YinYang Oatmeal Stout. Shredded steak goes on next, topped by carmelized onions.

Green and his staff make all of his products, including baking rolls, roasting meats, creating dips, cooking potato chips and wrapping cheesesteak egg rolls. But it’s the dips that set him apart from other cheesesteak shops, he said. “We are known for doing everything different.”

Green’s newest creation is the Wentzel Dip sandwich, named for the Philadelphia Eagles’ beloved quarterback. The Wentzel is a pretzel roll filled with chopped chicken steak, crispy tots, North Dakota-style fried cheese curds and beef bison dip cream cheese spread directly on the roll.

The sandwich will be sold on game days for the rest of the season. A portion of each sale will go toward the ERA Food Pantry in Levittown and the Bucks County Housing Group Food Pantry in Penndel.

It’s just one more way for Green to expand his two passions: cheesesteaks and philanthropy.
